v1.0.0

FluxIO Storage Engine

FluxIO is an ultra-high-performance, zero-allocation asynchronous storage I/O engine written in modern C++20. Designed for NVMe direct I/O (O_DIRECT), FluxIO leverages Linux io_uring with kernel submission polling (IORING_SETUP_SQPOLL), fixed pre-registered DMA buffers, an auto-scaling chunk manager (FileBlockManager), and an automatic POSIX Direct I/O fallback.

Achieving 504,531 IOPS (1,970.83 MiB/s) sequential write and 434,377 IOPS (1,748.28 MiB/s) random read throughput on consumer NVMe drives with sub-10 microsecond single-op latency, FluxIO completely eliminates kernel context switches and prevents filesystem locking bottlenecks under high concurrency.

Key Features

cmake -B build -S .
cmake --build build

# 3. Run individual io_uring examples
./build/io_uring_write

Integration & Installation Guide

FluxIO is a header-only, zero-dependency C++20 library (with optional runtime linking to liburing for Linux io_uring SQPOLL engine).

Include Styles

Any of the following include paths work out-of-the-box:

#include <fluxio.h>              // Standard top-level include
#include <flux_io.h>             // Alternative top-level include
#include <fluxio/fluxio.h>       // Namespaced include
#include <fluxio/flux_io.h>      // Master backend selector header

Method 1: Modern CMake FetchContent (Recommended)

Integrate FluxIO directly into your project without manual git cloning:

include(FetchContent)

FetchContent_Declare(
    fluxio
    GIT_REPOSITORY https://github.com/programmingGod-byte/FluxIO.git
    GIT_TAG        main
)
FetchContent_MakeAvailable(fluxio)

# Link to your application target
add_executable(my_app main.cpp)
target_link_libraries(my_app PRIVATE FluxIO::fluxio)

Method 2: CMake add_subdirectory / Submodule

If you cloned FluxIO into your project repository:

add_subdirectory(third_party/FluxIO)
target_link_libraries(my_app PRIVATE FluxIO::fluxio)

Method 3: Direct Drop-In (Manual Copy)

g++ -std=c++20 -O3 -I./include main.cpp -o my_app -luring -lpthread

Method 4: System-wide Installation

cd FluxIO
cmake -B build -S .
sudo cmake --install build

Method 5: Python Bindings (pip install .)

FluxIO provides native C++20 Python bindings via pybind11 with full Python Buffer Protocol support (zero-copy memory sharing with NumPy arrays and bytearrays) and automatic GIL release during I/O operations:

cd FluxIO
pip install .
import fluxio

# 1. Initialize Engine (Native io_uring or POSIX Direct I/O fallback)
engine = fluxio.StorageEngine() # Use fluxio.PosixStorageEngine() for unprivileged environments
engine.register_file(0, "storage.dat")
engine.setup()

# 2. Synchronous High-Level Direct I/O (Releases Python GIL)
written = engine.write_block(slot=0, buffer=b"A" * 4096, offset=0)
data = engine.read_block(slot=0, size=4096, offset=0)
engine.fsync_block(slot=0)

# 3. High-Throughput Asynchronous Pipeline (Lock-free SQ ring)
buf = bytearray(b"B" * 4096)
engine.write(slot=0, buffer=buf, offset=0, user_data=101)
engine.process_submissions(max_batch=1)

comp = engine.wait_completion(timeout_ms=1000)
print(f"Async completion: {comp} (latency: {comp.latency_cycles} cycles)")

Architecture & IO Classes

FluxIO provides zero-allocation asynchronous communication via SPSC lock-free ring buffers.

Core Data Structures

IORequest (Submission) and IoCompletion (Completion) define the contract between user applications and the storage engine:

Backends

1. io_uring Backend (Primary)

The io_uring backend delivers maximum IOPS by leveraging Linux 5.10+ kernel primitives:

2. POSIX Direct I/O Backend (Fallback)

When running on older kernels or unprivileged containers without io_uring, FluxIO smoothly degrades to synchronous Direct I/O (O_DIRECT) using pwrite, pread, and fdatasync while maintaining identical API contracts.

FileBlockManager & Allocators

Eliminating the High-QD ext4 Inode Lock Convoy

On sparse files, high concurrency writes hit ext4's exclusive inode lock (down_write(&i_rwsem)), collapsing throughput from 500K IOPS to 10K IOPS. FluxIO's FileBlockManager completely solves this by preallocating chunks (default 10 MB) whenever writes cross the 80% watermark using FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE.

O(1) 128-Bit Page Slot Allocator

Page slot allocation is performed using multi-word bitmasks with GCC intrinsic __builtin_ctzll, executing slot reservations in ~1.5 nanoseconds.

FluxIO Mode 2: Dynamic On-The-Fly Chunk Allocation

Using posix_fallocate on sparse files creates an exclusive inode lock (down_write(&i_rwsem)) in the Linux kernel for ext4 filesystems. To bypass this while dynamically sizing, FluxIO uses a custom FileBlockManager that preallocates 10MB chunk ranges via FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE asynchronously when an 80% watermark is reached, overcoming the IOPS collapse.
